Carbon Offsetting & India's CCTS

Understanding regulatory carbon markets, the national trading scheme, and climate action paths.

What is Carbon Offsetting?

Carbon offsetting is a climate action mechanism where individuals, businesses, or organizations compensate for their greenhouse gas (COโ‚‚) emissions by supporting projects that reduce, avoid, or remove an equivalent amount of emissions from the atmosphere.

๐Ÿ’ก Key Concept: 1 Carbon Credit = 1 tonne of COโ‚‚ equivalent (tCOโ‚‚e) reduced or removed.

Offsetting is designed to complement, not replace, direct efforts to reduce emissions at the source.

What is CCTS (Carbon Credit Trading Scheme)?

India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) is the official government-regulated carbon market established under the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2022.

  • Regulator: Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power.
  • Official Start: January 1, 2025.
  • Trading Oversight: Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) on recognized power exchanges.

How the Offset Mechanism Works

1

Project Registration

Entities register on the Indian Carbon Market (ICM) portal.

2

Validation

Accredited third-party verifiers assess compliance with approved methodologies.

3

Implementation

Developers execute the project and monitor emissions reductions.

4

Verification

BEE verifies actual reductions and issues Carbon Credit Certificates (CCCs).

5

Trading

CCCs are traded on regulated power exchanges for price discovery.

Eligible Offset Projects

The CCTS framework currently supports approved methodologies in renewable energy, green hydrogen, industrial energy efficiency, compressed biogas, landfill methane recovery, mangrove afforestation, and offshore wind.

The Role and Importance of the Government CCTS Framework

โš–๏ธ Statutory and Legal Backing

Established under the Energy Conservation Act, CCTS provides a robust legal foundation and regulatory certainty for carbon trading in India.

๐Ÿ”’ Ensuring Environmental Integrity

Mandatory BEE validation prevents greenwashing and double-counting, ensuring that every credit represents a real, permanent reduction.

๐ŸŽฏ Alignment with Climate Goals

Directly structured to help India achieve its NDCs under the Paris Agreement and the target of reaching Net-Zero emissions by 2070.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Transparent Trading

Under CERC oversight on power exchanges, the scheme guarantees market-driven price discovery and protects against manipulation.

๐ŸŒ Facilitating International Trade

Aligns domestic industries with global policies (e.g. EU CBAM), helping Indian manufacturers verify credentials for competitive trade.

๐Ÿค Promoting Sustainable Development

Requires projects to demonstrate environmental and social co-benefits, supporting the UN SDGs and rural communities.

๐Ÿ“š Official Resources & Where to Learn More

For detailed guidelines, approved methodologies, and technical documents, please refer to the official government portals:

๐Ÿš€

How to Offset on the Portal โ€” Stay Tuned!

The Indian Carbon Market portal registration and certificate trading features are rolling out in phases. Direct offset mechanisms and public registry access are undergoing active deployment. Stay tuned as trading features become fully operational.

Individual Offsetting Status: Direct individual retail offsetting is not yet open on the government portal. Under the current CCTS guidelines, trading of Carbon Credit Certificates (CCCs) requires registration with the official ICM Registry (run by Grid Controller of India) and is transacted via designated power exchanges. Individuals wishing to offset their carbon footprint in the meantime can support climate initiatives through verified voluntary carbon offset platforms.

๐ŸŒ Let's Save Our Planet Together!

How grown-ups and kids can clean up pollution and protect nature!

๐Ÿ›

What is Carbon Offsetting?

Imagine Earth is like a giant bathtub. When we drive petrol cars or use electricity made from coal, it's like adding dirty water to the tub. If we add too much, it will overflow!

Carbon offsetting is like opening the drain and adding clean water! We do special good things for Earth โ€” like planting trees or building solar panels โ€” that clean up the pollution we make.

๐Ÿš— 1 Carbon Credit = Cleaning up 1 tonne of pollution (as heavy as a small car!).
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

What is CCTS?

CCTS stands for Carbon Credit Trading Scheme. Think of it as India's official Planet Protection Club run by the government! When people do super good things for Earth, the government gives them "Thank You Points" (Carbon Credits) to say great job!

Why is it Important that the Government Runs This Club?

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Keeps Everyone Honest

The government makes sure the clean-up is real. Scientists check the math to make sure the pollution is actually gone! No cheating allowed! โœ…

๐ŸŽฏ

Helps the Whole Country

It helps India reach its big, important goal of stopping extra pollution completely by the year 2070. It's a giant team effort! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

๐ŸŒณ

Protects Nature and People

The government makes sure that earning points doesn't hurt animals, plants, or families. It keeps projects safe. ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿค

Teams Up with the World

Climate change is a global problem. Having an official club helps India team up and share good ideas with other countries! ๐ŸŒ

How Can YOU Help Save Earth?

๐Ÿ‘ท What Grown-ups Do:

  • โ˜€๏ธ Build solar panels and wind turbines.
  • ๐ŸŒณ Plant huge forests and protect mangroves.
  • โ™ป๏ธ Turn garbage and farm waste into clean energy.

๐ŸŒŸ What KIDS Can Do (You're Super Important!):

Amazing Facts! ๐Ÿง

๐ŸŒณ

One tree can clean up pollution from cars driving 26,000 miles in its lifetime!

๐Ÿ’ก

Turning off one light you're not using saves enough energy to watch TV for 3 hours!

Remember: Every small action matters! You are never too young to be an Earth Hero! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ’š

If you want to show your parents where to learn more about the Planet Protection Club, tell them to visit these official government websites:

๐Ÿ“ข

Ask Your Parent to Take Action!

While you are doing your part by saving energy at home, ask your mom or dad to look at the official Planet Protection Club (CCTS) website! The government is working on special ways for families to offset their carbon footprint directly. Ask your parents to stay tuned for when these new options roll out, and you can build a green future together! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ’š
